The Reserve Officer has been a part of American history longer than the career professional in law enforcement. Known generally as Reserve Police Officers, these supplementary Officers are recruited from among the responsible citizens in the local community. Some of the Reserve Officer’s duties and assignments may involve traffic regulation and crowd control service under disaster conditions, and routine patrol functions. Admittedly, Reserve Officers must be recruited, organized and trained under the necessary capabilities for this important assignment. The scope of the Reserve Officer’s duties is limited only by the level of their training. The Board of Metropolitan Police Commissioners and the Chief of Police of the St. John Police Department will set minimum hours. The hiring of the reserve Police Officers gives the administration of the police department tremendous latitude for special service personnel that could not otherwise have been provided to the community due to budget limitations. Once proper selection has been implemented, the Reserve officer will probably be found to be a highly intelligent and deeply motivated person who takes seriously the universal motto of policing “To Protect and Serve.”


  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED certificate.
  • Must have NO felony convictions.
  • Possess a valid Indiana driver’s license.
  • Must successfully complete all phases of the selection process.


  • Must complete a application packet.
  • Must pass the physical agility test.
  • Must pass a general knowledge written exam.
  • Must pass an oral interview.
  • Must pass a background investigation
